Finally, rapper AKA was in a celebratory mood on Tuesday – after his one-year-old album, Levels, reached gold status.
The album – released last year on a landmark date of 16th June, South Africa’s Youth Day – took exactly 12 months to sell 20 000 copies. Although it took a while to earn its gold status sales, AKA, whose real name is Kieran Jordan Forbes, is the first South African English rapper to reach gold.
The excited self-proclaimed Prince of South African Rap, who is currently on his UK tour, announced his milestone achievement to his 549k Twitter followers.
The 27-year-old tweeted: “AKA @akaworldwide – RISA CERTIFIED. FAN BOUGHT. 1ST ENGLISH SA RAP ARTIST. GOLD. #LevelsIsGold #LevelsUnlocked #GOLDMEGA”
With MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) and BET nominations to celebrate, the gold status should be a cherry on the cake for the multi-award-winning hip-hop star.
